Tattooing is safe, not particularly painful and takes only a few minutes, but but it can be uncomfortable (the dog must lie still on its side). The benefits, however, outweigh any discomfort. Contact the National Dog Registry at (800) 637-3647 for information and veterinarians or agents in your area who handle tattooing. The charge is $10 or $12 for the tattoo, plus $15 to register your dog. If your dog is ever lost or stolen, the registry will help you locate it.
