Christmas Tree Mayhem

Precautions will keep your dogs from wreaking havoc on the holiday.

No matter how many pets you have, set the tree in a substantial tree stand and tie it three-quarters of the way up to something such as a nail in a door or window frame. Before decorating the tree, spray the trunk (especially if you also have cats) and the lower branches with a repellent safe for pets. Then decorate the tree, putting large, unbreakable ornaments around the bottom and keeping the most fragile away from the outer tips of the branches. When you leave the room, unplug the lights and be sure the pets also exit. Keep a watchful eye on your pets and immediately punish any unwanted behavior. To administer quick corrections, keep a spray bottle full of water or an empty soda can with pennies in it near the tree. A squirt from the bottle or the sound from the can will startle and distract the culprits. Your best (and safest) bet may be to confine the pets when you are unable to supervise them.
